Minecraft Dungeons 2 Review
Read the review of Minecraft Dungeons 2, a sequel to a popular dungeon crawler by Mojang Studios and Double Eleven.
Mojang Studios and Double Eleven are back with the sequel to their Minecraft Dungeons title. The original Minecraft Dungeons is among my favorite isometric dungeon crawlers. After learning about its sequel, I was hyped for it and excited to see how the Devs will expand on the original title. Now that it is here and after trying it for myself, they did a pretty good job, as the sequel expands on almost every layer of its predecessor. This is our review of Minecraft Dungeons 2, developed by Mojang Studios and Double Eleven, and published by Xbox Game Studios.
NOTE: The product key was provided by the publishers for review purposes.
Story and Plot
Minecraft Dungeons II takes place after the events of the original game. Overworld is calm and peaceful, but the discovery of the Sift Dimension changes everything. The three evil Arch Illagers steal the brimming soul energy of the Sift Dimension to start tearing rifts between Dimensions. Illager armies and soul-corrupted foes overrun the villages, forcing survivors to flee and establish a refugee camp called Brave Haven, which is the main hub in Minecraft Dungeons 2. This is where the Heroes (players) come in to go against the Illager council and destroy the weapon to prevent dimensional collapse.
Overall, the story and plot for Minecraft Dungeons II are nothing jaw-dropping. They are there just to set up a goal and add some drama to the overall adventure.
Gameplay

When it comes to core gameplay, Minecraft Dungeons 2 has a complete overhaul of the level-based zones in the original game. Minecraft Dungeons 2 offers open-world zones, allowing you to explore the zones at your own pace. You are not bound to levels, so it makes the exploration layer better compared to its predecessor. All biomes are interconnected, and you can explore them seamlessly. This makes the dungeon crawler experience better, whether you are looking for better loot, completing dungeons, clearing towers, and so on.
The quest design is great too. They are more varied and woven into exploration, which is nice to experience alongside the main goal. As you can go from biome to biome, you can make use of the Minecarts and Teleporters to fast travel between them.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 also has better gear and progression design than the original. Unlike the original game, you can equip four armor pieces, instead of one, with each one granting you different buffs. All weapons and gear items come in different rarities, driving you to find a better one frequently. Enchantments can be applied to all gear items, so it makes the whole system more engaging, allowing players to experiment and come up with different builds. Every now and then, you will find yourself visiting the Brave Haven (main hub) for upgrades and enchantments.
Another crucial addition to the sequel is the Jump action; it does not sound a lot, but it improves the traversal. Unlike the original game, where you run into dead ends, you can just jump to reach higher ground or get across in Minecraft Dungeons 2.
Combat

Minecraft Dungeons 2 offers the same hack-and-slash dungeon crawling experience with its combat as the original, but better. With the addition of enchantments and armor improvements, combat feels more enticing. Moreover, the increased gear variety makes the encounter more fun. You can use honey bombs, toxic arrow pouches, dual crossbows, and other gear to tackle the situations. However, you do have to utilize the Soul Energy carefully. It is a crucial resource that powers the enchantments and artifacts.
Combat is fun in Minecraft Dungeons 2, but despite all of the cool weapons being there, crossbows still rule. You can come up with a toxic arrow build to melt the bosses from a distance with ease. After all, it’s all preference. However, one of the main complaints about Minecraft Dungeons 2 is that it can feel repetitive, especially after completing the campaign. The end-game revolves around side quests, loot hunts, and repetitive combat encounters.
Audio and Visuals

The audiovisuals in Minecraft Dungeons 2 offer much sharper visuals with dynamic lighting and biomes, with a reactive soundtrack that changes accordingly to the situation. There are over 200 tracks, and every time you step into a new biome or get into a fight, the music changes accordingly. Compared to the original title, Minecraft Dungeons 2 feels darker and more whimsical, with cinematic battles
Verdict – Score 8/10
Minecraft Dungeons 2 is a great sequel, as it expands well in the department of exploration, combat, and character customization. Playing it with friends makes it even more fun and allows your party to experiment more broadly with builds. The seamless exploration with the jump action keeps you going. However, a short campaign at launch might be underwhelming, as the end-game does not offer a promising adventure. Moreover, I wish that there had been a Nether biome in the sequel.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
