Consumer Associations in 9 EU countries ask Nintendo for solutions for defective Joy-Con

The console gaming industry has been dominated by PlayStation and Xbox over the years. Nintendo’s consoles are definitely there in the mix but against the might of Sony and Microsoft, it looks relatively small. This is while taking the Nintendo Wii U into consideration. Wii clearly failed to make a mark. Interestingly enough, the Nintendo Switch is performing rather well.

Where does Switch stand out?

Since its launch in 2017, Switch has sold over 57 million units in a span of 4 years. It surpassed Xbox One which has struggled to cross the 50 million mark. There are many reasons for Switch’s success. But, one of them is something a lot of PlayStation fans may be familiar with. Of course, we are talking about exclusive titles! Over the years, PlayStation has developed groundbreaking exclusives like the Uncharted, The Last Of Us, God Of War, Spiderman, and Horizon. This is exactly the kind of ‘secret-weapon’ Nintendo has in the form of games like Mario, Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Pokémon.

The next-gen consoles that are the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will definitely change the face of the console-war with their cutting edge hardware specs and high-end games. But, it may still be a while before we see a new Nintendo Console. But, during a QnA session during Nintendo’s AGM, President Shuntaro Furukawa and Director Ko Shiota revealed what the future holds for their upcoming consoles.

Nintendo Switch future as discussed by top execs

Question: 7 Could you tell us about the outlook for your next game system? Game hardware has always displayed an image on a TV or other kind of screen while you do something, and I think that’s where the limits for this format are. Would the hardware you’re thinking about go beyond those limits?

Furukawa: Our current generation game system, Nintendo Switch, has entered its fourth year since launch, but its momentum is increasing. We believe there are two factors behind this. First is the existence of two hardware configurations with different characteristics, in Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite. The second factor is that Nintendo’s development resources are concentrated on developing content for a single platform, Nintendo Switch. We want to extend the life cycle of Nintendo Switch while maximizing such advantages.

Director Ko Shiota’s words

Ko Shiota: In addition to the performance aspects (higher technical specifications), Nintendo’s dedicated video game platforms are developed with a focus on providing a comfortable environment for consumers to play fun software. From the perspective of playing with the image displayed on a TV, we believe that because consumers can play Nintendo Switch on a TV or the game console screen itself, it has greatly increased the opportunities for gameplay in various scenes in their lives, compared to previous consoles. Through Nintendo Switch, we’ve made many discoveries about where a dedicated video game platform can fit into a consumer’s daily life. We see scenes on social media of children and their families sitting around a game console to play, which gives us a renewed sense of the value of our dedicated video game platform. We will utilize these experiences in carefully considering the form our future game consoles will take.

I enjoy playing games, and gaming is a passion of mine. Among my favorite games are Tears of the Kingdom, GTA, and Cyberpunk.
