How to Upgrade the Needle in Hollow Knight: Silksong

The Needle is the primary weapon of Hornet in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Almost halfway through the game, you will be fighting enemies with the regular needle, doing low damage even to regular foes. You don’t have to worry about thinking that you might have missed something to upgrade the needle. The NPC that assists you in upgrading the needle is far in the game. In this guide, we will tell you how to upgrade the Needle in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

How to Upgrade the Needle in Hollow Knight: Silksong

To upgrade the Needle in Hollow Knight: Silksong, speak to Pinmaster Plinney over in Bellhart area. The Bellhart area is located left of the Greymoor and right of the Shellwood. When you first arrive in Bellhart, you will witness the Haunted Bellhart, where all the NPCs are paralyzed in Silk. It initiates the “The Threadspun Town” quest. Before you can speak to Plinney to get the upgrade for the needle, you must complete the quest to free everyone.

The Threadspun Town Quest Solution

To complete the Threadspun Town quest, you must go to the Shellwood area and progress through it to get the Cling Grip (Wall Jump) ability. After that, make your way to the top of the Shellwood and to the right. Follow the path to reach the boss arena, where you will fight the Widow (boss). Widow is a spider boss who cursed all of the folks of Bellhart. Defeat the Widow and return to the Bellhart, and you will see all the townspeople. It will conclude the Threadspun Town quest.

Find Pinmaster Plinney in Bellhart

Now that you have freed Bellhart from the Widow’s curse, you can find and speak with Plinney to get the upgrade of the Needle. To find Plinney, go to the left side of the town and jump up on the platform. Go to the top and then to the right. Skip the first building and go to the second with the Three Pins symbol. Enter the building and speak with Pinmaster Plinney. He will tell you the history of the Bellhart and lore. Skip through the dialogues, and then he will offer you the upgrade for the Needle for free. Accept the offer, and a brief cutscene will start. Watch the cutscene as he sharpens your Needle weapon. After the cutscene, you will receive the Sharpened Needle, an improved version of the Needle weapon.

Find the Pale Oil for Plinney for further Needle Upgrades

After Plinney upgrades the Needle for the first time, speak with him to get the “Pinmaster’s Oil” task. He will ask you to retrieve a Pale Oil, and in return, he will upgrade the Needle further. To get the Pale Oil, you will have to get to the Citadel. If you have already explored Citadel, there is a chance that you might have the Pale Oil. After getting the Pale Oil, return to Plinney to get the second upgrade.

Note: There are further upgrades for the Needle as well. You must complete Plinney’s tasks to get the upgrades.

With the Sharpened Needle, you will be able to deal more damage than usual. It will make the journey somewhat easier, especially when fighting tougher foes.
