Masahiro Sakurai shares why Rex isn’t a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter

As you all know, Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are now available to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a new DLC character from the second Fighters Pass. As you have seen, we can play with both, exchanging from one to the other in the middle of the battle.
Well, Masahiro Sakurai has published a new personal column in the latest issue of Famitsu where he has explained the decision to make the two heroines the main fighter of Smash Ultimate, instead of the protagonist of the game, Rex.
Here are some of the highlights from Masahiro Sakurai’s latest column(thanks to Ryokutya2089).
- “When it was decided that we were going to create a character for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, my first thought was to show and move Rex and Pyra at the same time on screen. But the conclusion that it is impossible came at the speed of the game. In a way, I asked the team to inspect it, but it was impossible. “
- «When we talk about 2 people who move as a single group, there are the Ice Climbers. They look the same and can only do the same things. When we tested Rex + Pyra, it was clear that we couldn’t do an essential task for its [data] capacity to exceed a processing load threshold. “
- “It was also determined that the system for having Rex as the main combatant and Pyra overseeing him was difficult. The design was so complex that many things would have to be done. ‘
- Rex would have to move alone. But then I thought it would be better if I could switch between Pyra and Mythra.
Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 joined the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster via DLC on March 4. This is the fourth addition to the Fighter Pass 2 and can be purchased separately for € 5.99. By purchasing the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 for € 29.99 from Nintendo eShop, players will also have access to Steve and Alex, Min Min, Sefirot, and two as-yet-unannounced Applicant Packs as they become available. Each pack includes a fighter, a stage, and multiple music tracks.
What do you think of this decision?
