It’s almost a tradition in Pokémon games to add tragic backstories to the new Pokémon – just take Tragosso and Mimigma as examples. But some of these stories are also a lot creepier and suggest, for example, that one of the other Pokémon has murderous intentions.
Also in the new Open World title Pokémon Legends: Arceus, one of the well-known new Pokémon seems to have a story that is both tragic and eerie.
Salmagnis is obsessed with the souls of the dead
Salmagnis is one of the new Pokémon that we will be able to catch in the Hisui region. The grouchy-looking water / ghost Pokémon was seen for the first time in the gameplay trailer of the Pokémon Presents presentation and served there as a mount with which we can cross lakes and rivers.
The official entry from Salmagnis now sheds light on where the Pokémon gets its power … namely from the dead. Who is still running cold down their backs? Brrr.
Salmagnis can develop from perch. Inspired by the journey of salmon, percussionists swim upstream, an arduous path that not all of them seem to survive. Salmagnis can arise when a perch becomes possessed by the souls of its dead conspecifics. As a result, the type of spirit is added to the water type, which perches already has. These souls then help Salmagnis to continue his arduous path and also help him in the fight:
“As soon as this Pokémon senses hostility, it becomes angry and attacks relentlessly until the opponent is defeated. It draws strength from the souls it is possessed by, which allows it to swim tirelessly. […] Salmagnis fights alongside of these souls attacking opponents as if they had a will of their own. “
New developments and regional variants
Salmagnis isn’t the only new Pokémon we’ll meet in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In addition to the new development of Damythir, we already know two regional variants of well-known Pokémon. We should also get new ways to catch Pokémon in the game. For example, we can sneak up on ourselves and snatch unsuspecting Pokémon from our hiding place. With stronger Pokémon, however, we will also have to go into classic combat to weaken them first.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus will be released exclusively for Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2022.
