6 things you need to do before you get your PS5 to be ready the day you receive it
If you have a PS4 at home and have bought a PS5, it doesn’t hurt to know everything you need to do to transfer all your data to the new console and not lose anything along the way, so you’ll be ready to enjoy PlayStation 5 as you walk in the door…
With just a few days to go before the launch of PS5, and even less if you are one of the countries that will be receiving it on 12 November, the time is getting shorter for the successor to PS4, and so the jump to the new generation of consoles. But before you take that step for good, you’d better take a look at these 6 things you should do before you get your PS5 so you’re ready the day you receive it.
Although the main thing, and what should be taken into account before it arrives, would be to find a good and suitable place for the console. PS5 is big, with dimensions of 390x104x260 mm, and to avoid the same thing that happened with a PS5 in a demo station, it is more than advisable to look for a wide and well-ventilated place. If you box it and it can’t ventilate well, you may have problems.
Once you’ve decided where to put your new PlayStation 5 console, you can start preparing other things. If you have a PS4, these are all the steps you need to take to have all your data ready for when PS5 arrives at your home… and start enjoying the console from the first minute.
6 things you need to do on your PS4 to quickly transfer your games and data when you receive your PS5
Move your PS4 games to external storage
The PS5’s backward compatibility only covers PlayStation 4, but it works beautifully and you can enjoy thousands of PlayStation 4 games with improvements in various areas such as resolution, increased FPS, shorter loading times, etc. So you’ll want to have them ready to play as your console arrives, and it’s good to have them on external media ready to run.
This way, you have everything ready and save space on the PS5 SSD. But make sure you do it in time, it will be a time-consuming process and during the whole process you won’t be able to use your console for anything else, so decide quickly if you want to do it or not.
How to move your PS4 games to external storage
First of all, go to Settings, Storage, System Storage, Applications. Press the Options button (on the right-hand side of the touch panel) and “Move to extended storage”, before continuing, make sure you know which games you want to move and press OK. When you do this, they will no longer be in internal storage. If this is the first time you’re using external storage on PS4, you’ll need to format it first.
You can do this under Settings, Devices, USB storage device and when selected choose “Format as extended storage”. Certain PS4 games will not work on PS5, as we indicated last October, so if you have any of them you don’t need to move them to external storage.
Have your saving files ready from PS4 to PS5
The easiest way to do this is through the cloud, but you’ll need a PS Plus subscription, although if you have one make sure your PS4 is as your primary console before you do it and that it’s done automatically. Go to Settings, Energy Saving Settings and Set Available Functions in Sleep Mode; deselect ‘Stay connected to the internet’. Then, go back to Settings, Manage application save data, Auto Upload and deselect “Enable Auto Upload”. By doing this you will be able to choose what will be uploaded and which games will be uploaded to the cloud but from your main PS4.
Now go to Settings, Application Saved Data Management, Data Saved on System Storage; select “Upload to Online Storage”, choose the games/files you want to upload and select the option or select “Copy to USB Storage” and follow the same process. When uploading to the cloud, you may need to overwrite any saved files you already have (if any), but you can check which will be more recent to avoid loss.
Synchronize all your trophies
Trophies don’t always update in your profile on their own, sometimes you’ll have to enter the Trophies area of your PS4 and they will update; as it has happened to you before. Before you disconnect your console, it’s worth checking that all this is still in order and up to date… in case you don’t want to lose any of your most recent achievements.
However, this process can be forced manually by pressing the Options button and selecting “Synchronise with PlayStation Network” from the trophy screen just after pressing the button.
Manage your saved screenshots and videos
The new PS5 has more than interesting functions and features to find out what you spend your game time on, such as collecting the time you have spent on each game and creating a gallery of the files you have shared on Twitter and/or Facebook on PS4. But if you also have PS4 screenshots or videos that you want to keep, you can easily copy them to a USB.
It’s quite easy, all you have to do is plug a USB storage device into your PS4, go to the image and video gallery on your console, press Options and select all the ones you want to copy, and then choose “Copy to USB device” to transfer them all.
Check your login details
Once you turn on your PS5, you’ll need to log in with your PSN account, so you’ll need to keep your password in mind to do so; and by the way, we recommend that you activate two-step authentication if you don’t have it active. This will save you time and possible headaches when you don’t remember your credentials on a new system, or if someone tries to access your account.
Although, well, you can always use the classic “I forgot my password” option because otherwise you’ll be locked out of your account when playing your new PS5 games or the ones you want to play on PS4 through the console’s backward compatibility.
Have you ordered your PS VR adapter yet?
We told you about it just last week, you could already request the adapter to be able to play PS VR on your new PS5. It’s a pretty simple process, it doesn’t have any cost and so no PlayStation VR game will stay through in the new generation of consoles through the already mentioned backward compatibility.
Once you’ve done that, just connecting it through this adapter will solve this problem and you’ll enjoy certain advantages on the new PS5. In addition, we’ve already seen the first look at PS VR and the PS5 camera adapter with incompatible charging times, enhancements, and games.
