Diablo 4 Awarded PlayStation Editors’ Choice, Amidst Calls for Baldur’s Gate 3

The launch of Diablo 4 on June 5, 2023, marked a resounding success, securing its position as the standout summer game release across all platforms. Recognizing this achievement, the PlayStation Editors’ Department bestowed upon the title the prestigious “PlayStation Editors’ Choice” award. The game’s exceptional reviews prompted PlayStation to prominently feature it on their front page, adorned with the Editors’ Choice distinction for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Chosen by critics and reviewers, the selection process for PlayStation Editors’ Choice typically yields highly positive outcomes, a trend Diablo 4 upheld until recent times.
Upon Diablo 4’s award, a majority of players concurred with the decision, while a dissenting faction argued that Baldur’s Gate 3 deserved the honor instead. After six years of development, Baldur’s Gate 3 made its initial debut on PC on August 3, 2023. However, over the span of two months, Diablo 4 developers issued multiple patches that adversely affected the player experience. Notably, the gameplay suffered due to experience points (EXP) nerf, exacerbating player concerns as the gameplay was already time-intensive, demanding over 120 hours to reach Level 100.
Amidst mounting criticism directed at both developers and Blizzard for exacerbating the game’s issues, players began advocating for the replacement of Diablo 4 as Editors’ Choice in favor of Baldur’s Gate 3. Hailing from Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a turn-based action-adventure game that launched on PC with resoundingly positive reviews, evident on Metacritic. The reverberations of Baldur’s Gate 3’s initial release eclipsed those of Diablo 4 and are widely hailed as the pinnacle of summer game releases.
Adding to the discourse, Baldur’s Gate 3 is poised to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2023, further fueling the ongoing debate.
