Former Blizzard President Wanted to Cut Down on Microtransactions in Diablo 4 & Reboot Overwatch 2
Jason Schreier’s latest book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, reveals various secrets about the company including unrealized plans for Warcraft 4, the development of Overwatch Mobile, working on a StarCraft Shooter game, and more. There are numerous interesting topics in the book and one of the final topics that Jason shared in the final chapter of the book is Mike Ybarra, Former President of Blizzard Entertainment, wanted to “cut down on microtransactions in Diablo IV and reboot Overwatch” before he stepped down.
Former Blizzard President, Mike Ybarra’s Plans Aren’t Specified
These plans were before Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, and there are no specifics of how these actions would have taken place mentioned in the book. After Mike Ybarra left Blizzard Entertainment, the company stuck to the base system of Diablo IV introducing numerous items and skins in the shop and battle passes. As reported in the previous month, Diablo IV has made $150 million from microtransactions lifetime with an overall total revenue of over $1 billion.
During the early launch of Diablo IV, the Devs got all sorts of responses from the players including some laughable ones for selling the color portals for $20 in the in-game shop. However, we don’t know exactly how would the Devs and the fans have reacted if the microtransaction live-service feature was taken out of the game.
Similarly, on Mike Ybarra ‘rebooting Overwatch’, there aren’t any specifics of what he had in mind for rebooting Overwatch. As Overwatch 2 is a live-service game replacing the original and making it a free-to-play game, rebooting it might be more critical for the game. However, if we take the meaning of ‘reboot’ in a positive way bringing a series of updates based on players’ feedback, it might have worked.
We might not see these actions being implied in any mentioned games, but currently, Diablo IV seems to be doing well. With its first expansion, Vessel of Hatred released on October 8, 2024, the game is doing well and have received numerous positive reviews.
