PS5: SONY READY TO DO ANYTHING TO MEET THE SHORTAGE OF CONSOLES

Launched last November, the PlayStation 5 is out of stock absolutely everywhere, in both versions. Discreet replenishments are noticed over the weeks, although the observation remains the same: the consoles disappear as quickly as they arrived. Sony is considering solutions to overcome this shortage of consoles, in particular by putting forward some relatively surprising ideas.

DRASTIC SOLUTIONS TO GET AROUND THE SHORTAGE

This Wednesday, Sony published its latest financial results. Among the figures put forward, the Japanese manufacturer believes that it was able to produce more PS5s than PS4s during the same period. 7.8 million next-gen consoles would have been sold against 7.6 million PlayStation 4. For the second fiscal year of the PlayStation 5, Sony wants to sell more than 14.8 million, the number of PlayStation 4 shipped to the time. There followed a discussion with investors during which Hiroki Totoki, CFO of Sony, was able to speak about the shortage of consoles and how the Japanese giant planned to overcome it.

“ Like I said before, we’re aiming for more sales volume than the PS4. But can we dramatically increase the supply? No, that’s unlikely.

Semiconductor shortage is one factor, but there are other factors that will impact production volume. So right now we would like to look to surpass Year 2 sales by 14.8 million, which was the second year of PS4.

For example, maybe we could find another supplier or change the design.

We have shown flexibility and, during fiscal year 2021, we wanted to adapt to the situation . “

Among the solutions put forward by Totoki, we find a possible contract with another supplier to overcome the lack of semiconductors, but especially the change of console design. Sony is indeed thinking about all the avenues to achieve the best possible production of its consoles and to meet the ever-present demand. However, this process is difficult to set up. It’s hard to believe that the Japanese manufacturer will change the design of its console to get around the shortage of components. Unfortunately, if Sony feels obligated, the giant could well take action. Sony remains optimistic about its production of consoles and wants to exceed the figures obtained with its PlayStation 4.

For their part, chip producers believe that the shortage will continue. The first half of 2021 should be complicated, although the best is yet to come. The tech giants will therefore have to take their troubles patiently, hoping that the storm will end soon. Until then, it is likely that the shortage will continue, both in the world of video games and in other sectors concerned.

I enjoy playing games, and gaming is a passion of mine. Among my favorite games are Tears of the Kingdom, GTA, and Cyberpunk.
