Reggie Fils-Aimé says Switch was an all-or-nothing product for Nintendo

It looks like Reggie Fils-Aime is stepping down from GameStop's board of directors.

During a New York Gaming Awards stream in late January, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé was asked what he considered to be his greatest achievement during his time at the company. He cited the transition from the Wii U to the Switch hybrid console and its successful worldwide launch.

Fis-Eme once again reminded them that the Wii U was a failed console, and it was important to him to rectify the situation.

People forget this, but when the Wii U came out, its sales were so bad that it was considered the worst selling platform. Maybe Virtual Boy’s sales were even worse, but the Wii U was way behind in the market then. When your business is entirely driven by games, your next device should be successful, and Switch continues to be an active platform with excellent sales.

According to Fis-Eme, he will always be proud of the team’s ability to go from concept to release, creating a platform not only for Nintendo’s own games but also for other developers, including indies.

Switch was an all-or-nothing product for Nintendo. Fortunately, it turned out to be a hit.

The switch has not only been a hit, but also the console market leader in a number of countries selling more units than the PS4 and Xbox One combined. For 2020, the Switch accounted for 87% of consoles sold in Japan, and in China, about a million units were shipped in a year with the help of Tencent.

Games for Switch are holding steady on the charts too and for 2020 Animal Crossing: New Horizons was one of the best-selling titles in many countries, also topping Amazon’s annual top list.

As of November 2020, Switch shipments worldwide stand at 68 million units with Nintendo set to release a more powerful console model in 2021, judging by early reports from verified media outlets.

I enjoy playing games, and gaming is a passion of mine. Among my favorite games are Tears of the Kingdom, GTA, and Cyberpunk.
