Starfield Locks to 30 FPS on XBOX Series X|S

Starfield is an upcoming and one of the most anticipated games of 2023. It is the latest RPG from Bethesda and it offers a Sci-Fi adventure in which players will get to experience over 1,000 different planets. According to the Devs, the civilization colonies can only be found on 10 different planets while other planets play a role in getting the required materials for creating and unlocking new items. Players would have to travel to various planets throughout their gameplay to find and retrieve the required materials.

As there are a lot of mechanics working on a bigger scale in Starfield, one of the most question that was asked to the director of Starfield is how would Starfield run on the console. Starfield is locked to 30 FPS on both XBOX Series X and XBOX Series S consoles. The only difference between them is the resolution. XBOX Series X plays Starfield on 30 FPS at 4K resolution and XBOX Series S plays Starfield on 30 FPS at 1440p.

A lot of players were not surprised because it is a big game and there can be optimization issues at the launch but most of the players want to play it on high FPS. Todd Howard explained in an interview why would he want to lock Starfield to 30 FPS. “I think it’ll come as no surprise, given our previous games, what we go for. Always these huge, open worlds, fully dynamic, hyper detail where anything can happen.

“And we do want to do that. It’s 4K in the X. It’s 1440 on the S. We do lock it at 30 because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff. We don’t want to sacrifice any of it. Fortunately, in this one, we’ve got it running great.

“It’s often running way above that. Sometimes it’s 60. But on the consoles, we do lock it because we prefer consistency. Right? Where you’re not even thinking about it. And we don’t ever want to sacrifice that experience that makes our games feel really, really special. So feels great. We’re really happy with how it feels even in the heat of battle.”

There are multiple things running along with the game and to prioritize the game performance it is best to feel the game at 30 FPS to enjoy the game without any stutters and breakdown. However, PC players would be able to enjoy Starfield on higher frame rates only if they have a powerful machine. The recommended specs of Starfield are arguably higher than normal AAA Games out there so not every PC player would be able to enjoy it at constant 60 FPS.
