Take-Two CEO believes graphics will be indistinguishable from actual images in ten years

Take Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick believes that in ten years’ time, graphics will be indistinguishable from real images. Photo-realism would open up new creative options in many of their games.

The new generation leap, with PS5 and Xbox Series X (coupled with the latest generation RTX graphics cards from Nvidia and Radeon from AMD), comes one step closer to photorealism, the obsession the industry has been pursuing for more than forty years. And according to the CEO of Take-Two, we could be there in ten years.

Strauss Zelnick, who runs the parent company of 2K Games or Rockstar, spoke about this at a conference, UBS Global TMT Virtual Conference. And he believes that in 10 years it will be impossible to distinguish between computer-generated graphics and real images.

“Technology allows our creatives to do things that have never been possible before, including making games that look exactly like ‘live-action’. What we have now looks very much like reality, but is still animation. In 10 years, you will have the option, if you want, to make things look completely realistic, all within a computer.

However, Zelnick points out that there will still be a distinction between the types of games, and gives us an example of one of his franchises: Borderlands. A game that looks like an animated universe and that will always be so.

“But this promise of making certain games, like basketball, look completely realistic (and that’s something we’re very close to) is very exciting, and gives us a new canvas on which to paint.

The NBA 2K21 is one of the first games to take advantage of the power of the new generation, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are significantly superior to the PS4 and Xbox One… also in price. However, Zelnick believes that the decision to make the next generation NBA version more expensive was justified, and he believes that consumers have accepted this without much trouble.

Take-Two is a company that owns Rockstar Games (the GTA or Red Dead Redemption sagas) and 2K Games (sports simulators such as NBA, PGA…). And very soon, throughout 2021, it will also add Codemasters, experts in the game of speed like Formula 1 or Dirt.

I enjoy playing games, and gaming is a passion of mine. Among my favorite games are Tears of the Kingdom, GTA, and Cyberpunk.
