gothic 1 remake lockpicking guide

Gothic 1 Remake has one of the trickiest and most bizarre lockpicking mini-games from recent times’ RPG titles. The lockpicking system puts you in the position of unlocking a lock by manipulating 5 plates. Although it looks simple enough, moving a plate affects the others, which makes it tough and takes time to unlock, unless you become a trained Lockpicker to pick the locks easily. In this guide, we will tell you everything you need to know about lockpicking in Gothic 1 Remake.

How to Lockpick in Gothic 1 Remake

Unlocking a locked chest or door in Gothic 1 Remake requires you to complete a lockpicking mini-game. This mini-game includes movable lock plates, and each plate has 7 holes on top of it from where the pin can pop out if positioned correctly. Your goal is to position all of the 5 plates in the correct position, which is the center, to complete the lockpicking.

Now, what makes this mini-game difficult is that 4 of the plates affect the other. Only 1 plate is individual and free to move in any position without affecting others. The best strategy is to lock down the first plate, so that it does not move by moving any other plate. Once you have done that, move on to the next plate and the others. However, keep the pins away from the edges of the plate. The lock will rattle, which is a warning for the lockpick to break. Move different plates to position the one you want to lock, and move to the next. It is best to leave the individual plate for the last, as you will be able to put it into the correct position without worrying.

TIP: Always manually save before attempting to open a locked door or chest.

How to Become a Trained Lockpicker in Gothic 1 Remake

Improving the Lockpicking skill in Gothic 1 Remake will require you to learn it from Fingers (Lockpick trainer). You can find Fingers in the Old Camp. To convince Fingers to train you, you will first have to speak with Diego. He will route you to speak with Fingers. Speak with Fingers, and he will ask you to get him a ring from the chest. This initiates the “A Ring for Fingers” quest. During this quest, you will have to open a locked chest to acquire the ring. Once done, head back to Fingers, and he will agree to teach you Lockpicking. However, becoming a Trained Lockpicker will cost you 10 LP (skill points) and 100 Ore nuggets.

Upon improving the lockpicking skill, the following effects will be active for you.

  • Breaking a pick does not does not reset your progress on a lock.
  • You can make up to four mistakes before breaking a pick.
  • Reduces lock complexity by removing a connection between two pieces.

Moreover, Fingers also trains you for Pickpocketing. Learning these stealth skills will help you get valuables easily.

Playing Video Games is the very first hobby that I partake in and it became my favorite hobby. Played Unreal Tournament 2004 as my first game which made me a fan of FPS Games. Story and Adventure Games are still my Cup of Tea to go with as they give more detailing to the described worlds and characters. I love to help out my fellow gamers across all over the world by making my publications.
