Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Review
Read the review of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a worthy remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013) by Ubisoft.
When it comes to picking the best Assassin’s Creed game, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag always comes into the conversation. Although that game is more than a decade old, it still offers a rich narrative with land and naval combat, fluid parkour, and an assassin’s journey like any other title. When Ubisoft first revealed the remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, I was skeptical. However, after a deep gameplay reveal, it took me back to 2013 when I first enjoyed my playthrough of this amazing title. Now, after playing Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, I have to say that Ubisoft not only made a worthy remake, but also enhanced the overall journey. This is our review of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, developed and published by Ubisoft.

Story and Atmosphere

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced follows the original story of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, where you play as Captain Edward Kenway. He is a pirate working under the fleet of a legendary pirate of the Caribbean Sea, Blackbeard. Edward Kenway and his men face a disastrous fate at the beginning, leaving all of his men dead and pushing him onto the shore of an island. An assassin who attacked Edward Kenway’s ship is also on that island, starting a chase sequence that ends in a battle. Edward Kenway is a pure pirate at his heart, even when he takes the fake identity of the assassin. He is in piracy for the love of money, so that he can have enough to settle back in England with his loving wife.
Edward Kenway makes it to the assassin’s location in Havana to role-play his identity to get whatever he can. This is where the story introduces the Templars, revealing their goal of finding the Observatory, for which Edward does not have any idea. The narrative mixes pirating and core Assassin’s Creed plot very well to let players experience both sides.
The world of the Caribbean Sea in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is beautiful. It is more alive, warm, and free than the original title. You get to witness the beauty of popular landmarks like Havana and Kingston, the secrecy of Assassins and Templars, and the dangers of the deadly sea with thunderstorms and blizzards. The rework of the world is highly noticeable in this remake, and it refreshes the whole journey.
Gameplay

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a pure action-adventure game, providing an authentic journey like the original title. There are no RPG elements like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, keeping players engaged in Edward’s journey, with cinematic storytelling, pirating, and assassin-hood. Although there are no RPG elements from the previous titles, the menu and inventory design is the same as Shadows. There is no skill tree or leveling system tied to Edward, like in the original title. You do not have to grind XP of any kind to unlock better abilities for exploration or combat. Edward himself is capable of performing swift parkour, double assassinations, wall attacks, and sneaking.
The game offers great freedom of exploration. Visit the tavern for a drink or a game of Checkers, synchronize at the eagle points to reveal more content in the surroundings, pet and feed chickens, dogs, and other animals, and go on the treasure hunt by following the clues on treasure maps. There is a variety of content outside the main story that keeps you engaged with the Caribbean Sea and piracy. Once you have the diving bell, you can dive deeper into the sea to look for chests around sunken ships. Moreover, you can hunt sharks at numerous locations with harpoons. There is also a cat and monkey pet companion that accompany you on your voyages. However, you can only interact with them at the Manor, which unlocks later in the main story. The Manor becomes your main base of operations, where you can decorate and send your crew on various missions to gather resources. Resources are crucial for upgrading Edward Kenway’s Ship, the Jackdaw. However, the advanced upgrades are locked behind the shop tier on the island, requiring you to upgrade the shop first.
Land and Naval Combat
Combat in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is fairly modernized and improved for both land and naval. For land combat, you have three types of swords, each with unique attack patterns and heavy attack styles. Rapiers are best for precise attacks, Cutlasses are best for crowd control, and Pistol-Swords are best for multi-targeting. I found cutlasses to be my go-to swords for wide charged attacks to hit multiple enemies at once. In addition to the weapon of choice, takedowns, sneak attacks, and assassinations play a crucial role in every encounter. Some enemy types are easier to take down, while others can toss Edward away. Vaulting over Brutes and Captains can leave you vulnerable to their attacks. You always have to adapt to new techniques within a fight to take down certain enemy types.

However, the core defensive options for land combat stay the same. You have dodge, block, and parry. Dodging allows you to avoid an incoming attack either by rolling to the side or vaulting over the enemy. Blocking lets you block the regular strikes of the enemies, but leaves Edward vulnerable to heavy strikes. Parrying plays a crucial role in breaking the enemy’s stance. Perform a perfect parry, and you will get to witness a satisfying takedown. Another great aspect of land combat is kicking. You can kick an enemy into a wall to get the takedown opportunity.
Naval combat is as impactful as land combat in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. You captain Jackdaw, a long ship with cannons, mortars, and barrels. The overall control of the ship is very smooth, allowing you to aim and fire at opposing ships with ease. After taking down a ship, you can board it to repair the Jackdaw, lower the wanted level, or get additional rewards.
Sound and Visuals

The sound design of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is amazing, with lively sounds of citizens, shanties of fellow crew, thrashing of swords, and explosions of cannons; everything sounds clean. The voice acting of every character is very well-done, and the expressions in cinematics are very promising. Moreover, the sound design of waves, thunderstorms, and blizzards enhances the overall voyage experience in the Caribbean Sea. As you set off on a voyage, your crew will sing shanties that you can change manually. Moreover, you can find shanties in all the major cities around the Caribbean Sea.
The visuals and graphics are very modern in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. It does justice to the whole remake, showing characters’ expressions, strong winds, great lighting, and foliage. Moreover, the water and locations within the sea look very beautiful. The animation of parrying enemies and shooting cannons is well crafted, enhancing the overall experience.
Verdict – Score 9/10
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is an amazing remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag that modernizes and enhances the original title, while providing the same exciting adventure. The new combat maneuvers let you switch playstyles with different swords to tackle certain enemy types. Takedowns feel more cinematic and impactful, and the gadget use gives you the sensibility of an assassin. Hunting plays a crucial role when it comes to upgrading Edward’s health and tools. The pirating feels more rewarding and brutal, especially during thunderstorms. Last but not least, the overall rework of visuals and graphics makes this whole adventure more alive. I strongly recommend this remake, as it will let you relive the experience that you once felt back in 2013.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will be released tomorrow, July 9, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
