Madden NFL 27 Review

EA Sports is back with the next installment in the Madden NFL series: Madden NFL 27. Players who have a love for American Football, always come to this franchise for the in-depth game systems, management, and overall gameplay. Although EA left out some nails, every year it is an improvement, and this year’s Madden NFL has received a massive overhaul, both for game mechanics and overall fluidity. However, it still depends on what type of player you are, as the Ultimate Team player would still have to deal with the same grind, whereas the casual players would feel more immersed. This is our review of Madden NFL 27, developed by EA Orlando and published by EA Sports.

Gameplay

The core gameplay of Madden NFL 27 will most likely feel the same to the returning players from Madden NFL 26. However, crucial changes have been made in this new installment to make it feel more impactful. Starting with custom adjustments, these give you more control over the offensive and defensive plans. Defending is more real-time, allowing the new AI to react to every throw and play effectively. Although the defending feels better and more impactful, the animations can be underwhelming, which makes the experience inconsistent. Despite the inconsistency from animations, learning the new defensive coverage feels rewarding.

Team and player rating also matter. Using a weaker team against a team with a higher rating feels more challenging. One of the biggest improvements in Madden NFL 27 is the new Persona Engine in the Franchise Mode. This new engine gives players personalities, allowing them to have certain expectations, making the Contract talks more dynamic. While you are on the field, you will notice something familiar, like the time-based catch mechanic. If you have played EA College Football, then you will find it more compelling.

Tackling, blocking, and collisions do feel more organic, but inconsistent animations can make them hard to ignore. One of the new gameplay features that impacts the core gameplay is the dynamic weather. Weather like rain and snow changes the feel of the game, impacting stamina, movement, and ball security.

Game Modes

Madden NFL 27 offers 6 game modes at launch. These modes include Play Now, Franchise Mode, Superstar Mode, Madden Ultimate Team, Online Head-to-Head, and the new Coach Mode. Play Now is your classic quick matches, where you can pick any team to play against AI or friends. The Franchise Mode is more compelling and dynamic in Madden NFL 27, thanks to the new Persona Engine. It is the perfect team management mode for players who want more control over building a perfect roster.

Superstar Mode is your single-player NFL career, where you can start as a rookie to all the way to the Hall of Fame. It is good to see an improved Superstar Mode, offering branching narratives that include rivalries. MUT also has some QOL changes, but the grind remains the same. If you are wondering what the grind is like in MUT in this installment, it is the same, so be prepared. Online Head-to-Head is the multiplayer mode where you can play against other players. It does support cross-play, so the matchmaking feels faster for both competitive and casual play.

Lastly, the Coach Mode is the newly added game mode in Madden NFL 27. In this new mode, you can call your plays without controlling the players. This mode is best for those players who want to focus on strategy and play-calling.

Sound and Visuals

The sound and audio design of Madden NFL 27 is better. The crowd reacts dynamically to all the plays in a match, which is great for immersion. There are numerous new commentary lines, so it feels refreshing, but the lines can become repetitive. The visuals are the best in the franchise, thanks to Frostbite 4.0. The ray-tracing lighting is great, and the overall jersey physics feel realistic. Moreover, the dynamic weather with dynamic shadows and reflections enhances immersion.  

Verdict – Score 7/10

Madden NFL 27 is an overall improvement in the series, making it a great American Football game. The overall gameplay feels more impactful and dynamic, where poor play and good play make the stadium and players react accordingly. Defensive AI improvement is great, but it can be overwhelming, especially when AI tackles chaotically even in lower difficulty settings. The new Persona Engine is great, especially for those who are interested in building a perfect roster. Although the new changes and improvements make the game good, there are some inconsistencies and bugs that hold it back.
