The cow is an optional pet that you can unlock for Link in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. You will run into the cows at the Lon Lon Ranch. Cows are the primary source of Lon Lon Milk, which is the specialty of Lon Lon Ranch. Although you can get milk from any cow at the ranch by playing Epona’s Song, you can have a personal cow at Link’s House. In this guide, we will explain how to unlock the cow in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

How to Unlock the Cow in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

To unlock the cow in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, players must complete Malon’s Friend side quest and then return to Lon Lon Ranch to complete a bonus course in under 40 seconds. Malon’s Friend is a crucial side quest for Malon that is split between the Child and Adult timelines. After players have met with Zelda for the first time, they can visit Malon at the Lon Lon Ranch to begin the side quest.

After pursuing the quest in the child timeline, return to Lon Lon Ranch in the adult timeline to free Epona. This unlocks Epona the horse for Link. After escaping with Epona, go back to Lon Lon Ranch to find Malon standing outside the corral. Speak with Malon to accept participation in a bonus course around the corral.

NOTE: Make sure you are mounted on Epona when you accept to participate in the bonus course.

After accepting to run the course, you must finish the course in under 40 seconds to unlock cow as a reward. The course is a 2-lap obstacle run around the corral. There are a few jumping obstacles in the course that you must jump over and complete 2 laps in under 40 seconds. Overall, it is not a challenging course. Reserve the boost for after the jumps to cover the distance, and you should complete the course in around 35 seconds.

Upon completing the course in under the record time, Malon will mention that she will send the gift to Link’s house. Go to Link’s House in Kokiri Forest to find the cow.

What Does the Cow Do in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The main use of the cow is to get milk from her by playing Epona’s Song. If you have an Empty Bottle, play Epona’s Song next to the cow to get Lon Lon Milk. Consuming Lon Lon Milk replenishes 5 hearts
