Rumored Sony Acquisition of CD Projekt RED Proven False: Here's the Truth

Remember that Cyberpunk 2077 went on sale on December 10th.

CD Projekt has revealed that digital sales of Cyberpunk 2077 have already exceeded all development and marketing costs of the Polish game studio. The game which finally saw the light of day after a few unfortunate delays has finally managed to become a bestseller ranking as the best-selling game in PC history at one release.

But from CDPR going into even more detail specifying that only with the reserves that the game had could already be converted into profits for the study. CD Projekt revealed their 65/2020 financial report where they describe the commercial success of Cyberpunk 2077 in commercial terms. In essence, they claim that they have already made more money than it took to develop the game and its marketing.

“The Board of Directors of CD PROJEKT S.A. with registered office in Warsaw (now referred to as ‘the Company’) hereby announces that the estimated license royalties to be received by the Company together with the reserves of Cyberpunk 2077 on all its digital distribution platforms have already exceeded the following:

  • Total development costs related to the game.
  • Promotional and marketing costs incurred or anticipated by the Company for the remainder of 2020″.

In other words, this means that with only the bookings and subsequent sales on digital platforms (Steam, GOG – which is theirs – Epic and/or Stadia) they have already recovered everything in just one day on sale.

Although, how much did it cost to develop Cyberpunk 2077? CD Projekt has not published exact figures, but in its Q3 2020 revenue presentation, it cited development costs since the beginning of 2018 as being around 111 million dollars. On Twitter, the study confirmed that Steam’s profits alone exceeded $50 million more than two weeks before its launch.

Although it presents problems on PS4 and Xbox One, as well as some lack of optimization on PCs, the new game from the studio of the saga The Witcher has been more than a success among players.

I enjoy playing games, and gaming is a passion of mine. Among my favorite games are Tears of the Kingdom, GTA, and Cyberpunk.
