Nintendo Sues Yuzu

Nintendo of America Inc. files a lawsuit against Tropic Haze LLC for breaching the Nintendo Switch encryption software by using Yuzu’s decryption software which allows the players to play Switch-released games on other platforms. Nintendo also blames Yuzu for providing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom one week prior to its original release on Switch which resulted in over a million downloads.

Nintendo stated in their lawsuit against Yuzu, ‘Yuzu unlawfully circumvents the technological measures on Nintendo Switch games and allows for the play of encrypted Nintendo Switch games on devices other than a Nintendo Switch.’ Nintendo further stated on unlawful circumventing of Yuzu with, ‘YUZU-EMU.ORG provides detailed instructions and FAQs on how to install Yuzu and get it running with unlawful copies of Nintendo Switch games.’

Both of these highlights can be held up in court and another major blame that Nintendo made on Yuzu is regarding the decryption of Nintendo’s one of the latest and biggest games, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The game was originally released for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023, but the Yuzu emulator was providing its pirated copies for over a week of the game’s official release.

‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was unlawfully distributed a week and a half before its release by Nintendo. Infringing copies of the game that circulated online were able to be played in Yuzu, and those copies were successfully downloaded from pirate websites over one million times before the game was published and made available for lawful purchase by Nintendo. Many of the pirate websites specifically noted the ability to play the game file in Yuzu.’

Furthermore, Nintendo claimed that more than 20% of the download links for pirated copies of Zelda pointed to Yuzu. Well, this isn’t the first time that Nintendo has sued a third-party emulator company but this time their approach to similar cases in the past is different.
