Mortal Shell 2: How to Change Difficulty – Night Mode
In this guide, we will explain how to change the difficulty and Night Mode in Mortal Shell 2.
Mortal Shell 2 has a lot of unique gameplay mechanics that are laid out in the open for players. Instead, the game requires you to find certain items that can help you tinker with the overall gameplay. Although there are no difficulty settings, which can be rough for newcomers, there are ways to lower and raise the difficulty in Mortal Shell 2. While lowering the difficulty requires you to equip the Slayer Seal, raising the difficulty further requires activating Night Mode. In this guide, we will explain how to change the difficulty and Night Mode in Mortal Shell 2.
How to Change the Difficulty in Mortal Shell 2

There are no direct options available in the settings menu to change the difficulty in Mortal Shell 2. The game has a fixed difficulty mode, allowing players to have an authentic experience of the journey. However, there are different items in the game that help you get through the tougher enemies with ease. One such item is the Slayer Seal, allowing you to stagger enemies and restore Health and Resolve by performing a Riposte attack on a staggered enemy. To make the game difficulty even harder, you have to change the in-world time to Night Mode.
How to Activate Night Mode in Mortal Shell 2
To activate Night Mode in Mortal Shell 2, you must speak with Thestus at the top of Marrow Keep. However, Thestus is not available straight away. You must first summon Thestus. To do so, you first need an item called “Gloombound Flame”, and then use it on the lantern on top of the Marrow Keep.
Where to Find the Gloombound Flame

The Gloombound Flame is a Key Item that you can find on a pillar near the Great Arbiter of Flesh boss. The Great Arbiter of Flesh is one of the earliest bosses in the game that you can encounter south of the Widow’s Overlook Beacon. From the beacon, head south and look to the right to spot the boss walking around some pillars. You can fight and defeat this boss if you want, or you can run to the pillar and pick up the Gloombound Flame.
Light up the Lantern on top of Marrow Keep

Once you have the Gloombound Flame, head to the Marrow Keep. Keep going straight in this hub area until you reach an elevator. Go up the elevator and interact with a lantern to use the Gloombound Flame item. Once done, it will spawn Thestus, and you will get the option to “Call forth the Night.” Accept it to change the world into Night Mode, which increases difficulty. To switch back to daylight, speak with Thestus again on top of the Marrow Keep.
What is Night Mode in Mortal Shell 2
As mentioned above, Night Mode changes the game’s difficulty to the hardest. During the night, enemies become tankier and more aggressive. However, this does come with a trade-off. While defeating the foes at night, you will receive more Gloom and Coins. This allows you to farm Gloom and Coins to level up and upgrade weapons and Tarstones. Moreover, there are some special dungeons and NPCs that are only available during the night and are worth exploring.
