Valheim: How to Get the Grappling Hook

Valheim 1.0 adds a lot of new features and changes that returning players might notice at a glance. Although the initial progression of the game stays the same as in Early Access, traversal through later biomes can be harsh if you do not prepare. The Deep North is the newest biome, with glacial peaks and frozen seas; there is much to discover, and reaching certain heights might only be possible with a grappling hook. The grappling hook is a new tool or item for the players in Valheim that can help them reach new heights, cover distance swiftly, or land safely to avoid death from a height. In this guide, we will explain how to get the grappling hook in Valheim.

How to Get the Grappling Hook in Valheim

The grappling hook is a new tool that can only be crafted at a Forge using specific materials. However, similar to other tool recipes, you must first unlock the grappling hook’s blueprint to craft it. The hardest part is getting the blueprint, as it unlocks by finding a “Hook”, which is a rare drop from Dvergr Treasure Chests that spawn behind a mysterious door inside Mistlands Infested Mines.

Where to Find the Hook

If you are early in the journey, there is no point in looking for the Hook, since you can only find it inside the dungeons in Mistlands. Once you have made your way to the Marble Mountain biome (Mistlands), you must look for the Hook to get yourself the grappling hook.

After arriving in Mistlands, clear out the Infested Mines in search of a mystery door with blue glyphs. Now, these mystery doors will not be in plain sight, meaning they are behind hidden pathways. While you are clearing out soldiers and going through the dungeons, cut down any possible path to see if there is a mystery door behind it. Upon finding a door, open it and search the Dvergr Treasure Chests inside.

NOTE: The Hook is a rare drop from Dvergr Treasure Chests, so it might take you a run of multiple Infested Mines before finding one.

As you pick up the Hook from the chest, the Grappling Hook blueprint will unlock, allowing you to craft it at a forge.

How to Craft the Grappling Hook

Now that you have unlocked the blueprint, it’s time to craft the Grappling Hook using the following materials.

• 1x Hook: Rare drop from Dvergr Treasure Chest inside Infested Mines.
• 10x Yggdrasil Wood: Drop from cutting Yggdrasil Trees in Mistlands.
• 10x Refined Eitr: Produced at Eitr Refinery using Sap and Soft Tissue.
• 4x Mandibles: Drop from defeating the Seeker Soldiers in Mistlands and inside Infested Mines.

Gathering all of these materials is not that difficult, especially if you have made yourself at home in the Mistlands biome. Once you have all the materials, head over to the Forge to find the recipe for the Grappling Hook. Select the recipe and continue to craft it to get yourself a Grappling Hook.

The Grappling Hook is an essential tool that will help you not only traverse the Deep North but the Mistlands as well. However, you must first make yourself familiar with using the Grappling Hook. It costs a decent amount of stamina while using it, so keep that in mind. Moreover, you can aim and shoot the hook, and then hold the Space bar to reel yourself in. Lastly, you have to press the RMB (Right-click) to release the hook and reload it.
