Starfield: Persuade People

In Starfield, there are numerous ways to tackle a situation whether it’s recruiting a crew member or encountering a major opposition enemy. You can recruit the crew member to hire them with their demanding fee of credits but persuading them can help you lower the hiring fee. Similarly, you can attack the enemy to get rid of them or you can just talk your way out of the encounter without fighting but, sadly, you will not get to loot the enemy which can cost you several goodies.

Looking to know how to persuade people in Starfield, then you are at the right place. This guide will help you with persuasion mechanics in Starfield.

How to Start Persuasion in Starfield

To start persuasion, you will have to select the “Persuade” option from the dialog bars while talking to an NPC. There will be numerous occasions in which you can find yourself getting a Persuade option while talking to the characters. Not only you will get to persuade people in the main missions but in side quests as well as for hiring new crew members.

How to Successfully Persuade People in Starfield

All the players will be able to persuade the characters from the start of the game but the players who start with the Persuasion Skill, have a higher chance of successfully persuading the characters. If you have selected a background from the following, you will already have the Rank 1 of Persuasion Skill which allows you to have a 10% increased chance of success when persuading someone.

  • Diplomat
  • Industrialist
  • Sculptor
  • Space Scoundrel

However, if you didn’t select anyone of the backgrounds mentioned above, you still can unlock the Persuasion Skill from the Social Skill Tree for 1 Skill Point. To increase your chances of successfully passing the persuade check in Starfield, you must unlock Persuasion Skill and upgrade its rank to 4. You can upgrade the rank of Persuasion Skill by completing its challenges and spending a Skill Point for each rank. By upgrading the rank of Persuasion Skill, you will get the following bonuses.

  • Rank 1: 10% increased chance of success when persuading someone.
  • Rank 2: 20% increased chance of success when persuading someone.
  • Rank 3: 30% increased chance of success when persuading someone.
  • Rank 4: 50% increased chance of success when persuading someone.

So, having a higher rank in your Persuasion Skill will allow you to pass the persuasion check more often. However, there are a few chances that you might mess up the dialog while persuading the character. Fortunately, there are 3 tries for persuading every character and if you have messed up the first 2 tries, simply exit the conversation and the persuade option will reset with all 3 tries. It is a small trick that you can use whenever you are failing the persuade check.

How Persuasion Works in Starfield

Now, that you have learned how to increase your chances of persuading people, let us discuss how persuasion works.

Once you have interacted with an individual that you want to persuade and selected the persuade option, you will see several dialog options with a number written on the left side of the dialog. Each number will have a “+” sign behind it and be represented in three different colors, Green, Orange, and Red. If you look down at the bottom of the screen, you will see several Bars under the Persuasion heading. You need to fill the bars to successfully persuade the character and you do that by selecting the dialog with a number behind it.

Green has the lowest number among the other two colors and it is because it has the highest chance of passing and filling up the one bar for persuasion. The Orange and Red can work to persuade the characters but mostly, you will lose a try. However, if you pass the persuade check by selecting the dialog with an Orange or Red color, you will fill up the same number of bars on the Persuasion Bars at the bottom of the screen. For instance, if the orange dialog has “+3” on it, you will fill up 3 bars of persuasion.

The characters are easy to persuade and have around 4 Persuasion Bars in total and it is easy to pass Persuasion checks on them with a high rank of Persuasion Skill. But some of the characters have 7 to 8 persuasion bars that you need to fill up to successfully persuade them. Speaking of characters with high persuasion bars, you can also Auto-Persuade them if you get the first 6 bars filled up without failing a single persuasion check.  Once you have filled up 6 bars, you will get the option to Auto-Persuade which you can utilize to pass through the next dialog option without failing. It increases the chances of persuading a valuable individual even more.
