Super Bomberman R 2 – Review
Super Bomberman R 2 is a sequel to Super Bomberman R developed and published by Konami bringing the original and loved bombing arcade action on various playable modes. The premise of the game is simple and forwarding as you will get to control a Bomberman character to bomb your way out of the stages while taking out enemies in the Story mode. However, the actual fun begins in the Multiplayer Mode with brand new 3 modes each with its level of chaos.
Story
Super Bomberman R 2 does include a Story Mode which can be enjoyed with a series of repetitive stages where you have to keep the blue squishy creatures safe. The story of Super Bomberman R 2 is not a great work as there is a Black Moon who threatens to destroy Planet Bomber and it’s up to 8 Bomberman Bros to stop the Black Moon and prevent its evil plans. The plot is decent but it is the dialogue writing and the voice acting that makes it ordinary. There is not a lot of potential in the dialogues as well as the voice acting even for the cartoonish cutscenes.
Since there are a lot of other games out there for little kids with great dialogue and voice acting, it is hard to not mention the underperformance of Super Bomberman R 2 for the Story Mode.
Multiplayer Modes
The multiplayer of Super Bomberman R 2 contains 3 new modes along with the standard 16-player mode. The 3 new modes include a Castle Mode, Grand Prix Mode, and Battle 64. The Castle Mode is the 16-player mode in which teams of 2 (1 vs. 15) have to raid the castle and the other team has to defend the castle by using various machines. The defender is alone at the castle and 15 other players have to make use of bombs to make their way to find certain keys to unlock the treasures near the defender.
In the Grand Prix Mode, 2 teams of 3 players will battle against each other to reach the highest score either by defeating other players with bombs or collecting the crystals. The Battle 64 mode is the most popular and fun in my opinion as it is the most chaotic mode in a fun way. 64 players go at each other to be the last one standing. Instead of playing on a single board, 64 players will be spread across 16 different boards and each player on the board has to win their respective game lastly, they will face each other on the final board for victory.
Level Editor
Level Editor is another great feature of Super Bomberman R 2 that allows players to use their creativity to build their maps and share them with other players around the world. There is a large variety of objects and traps at players’ disposal that they can utilize to build the most chaotic map possible for everyone to try by uploading it to the community. This feature greatly increases the replayability of the game and this is what makes the Super Bomberman R 2 fun.
Verdict – Score 8/10
Super Bomberman R 2 is everything more of its predecessor. The story mode is as simple and repetitive as its predecessor but the multiplayer mode of Super Bomberman R 2 is the actual star of the game. It is chaotic, fun, and a lot of explosive when comes to Battle 64. If you are a fan of the original Super Bomberman R, then we recommend you to try out its new sequel to either play online or enjoy with your friend on your home couch.
Super Bomberman R 2 is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam).
