Aonuma revealed that Nintendo’s primary goal was to ensure that every aspect of the game met its high-quality standards. Paying particular attention to the physics and overall gameplay experience, the development team strived for perfection, leading to the decision to postpone the game’s release. Nintendo’s Pursuit of Perfection

Aonuma emphasized Nintendo’s dedication to delivering a game that aligns with its rigorous standards. Aonuma further revealed that the majority of the game’s development had concluded by March 2022, when the delay was announced. During the interview, Aonuma shared insights into the decision to hold a small gameplay presentation in March. Based on player reactions to the game’s trailer shown during a February Direct event, the development team noticed that while players responded positively, there was a lack of enthusiasm. Aonuma speculated that players had not fully grasped the gameplay mechanics and the fun elements that Tears of the Kingdom offered. The subsequent gameplay presentation aimed to address this issue and provide a better understanding of the game’s unique features and enjoyable experiences.

Challenges and Satisfaction in Game Development

Aonuma admitted that developing Tears of the Kingdom proved more challenging than its predecessor, Breath of the Wild. Despite the difficulties, he expressed satisfaction with the final outcome. Aonuma mentioned that as he grows older, completing a test playthrough of his own game takes longer, typically spanning over a week rather than a day. Nevertheless, he has no plans to retire from the industry and hopes that Tears of the Kingdom will inspire players to think creatively and apply their imagination not only in the game but also in real life.

The Release and Record-Breaking Success

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released on May 12th and swiftly set a sales record for the series. Within the first three days, the game surpassed 10 million copies sold. This remarkable achievement reflects the anticipation and enthusiasm among fans who eagerly embraced the latest installment in the beloved franchise.
