Dying Light 2- Everything about co-op mode: progress, invite friends, and more

As in the previous game, you can play almost all missions and activities in a co-op in Dying Light 2. You can find out how to invite friends or join any game here. We also show you which functions you, unfortunately, have to do without in multiplayer.

Unlock co-op mode

When you start your adventure in Dying Light 2, you will probably immediately ask yourself when you can start playing in co-op – it’s not possible right away. Except for the prologue, you can play all main and side quests as well as missions in pairs. The prologue is complete when you reach the town of Villedor and are free to move around there.

So you can activate the multiplayer

If you want to open your game world for other pilgrims so that they can join, you must first activate multiplayer in the menu. This is how it works:

  • Open the options and switch to the “Online” tab.
  • Under Game Type, “Single-Player” will probably be selected. So no co-op is possible. So switch to an appropriate setting to enable multiplayer.

If you choose “Public” , all players from all over the world can join your game. If switched on, you will then also receive distress signals from other pilgrims that you can follow. You then join a game and can help the player in need. If you want to play with friends or invite them, you can choose “Private” or “Friends only”.

Maximum number of players and progress for all players

In the online menu, you can see that a maximum of four players can gamble in co-op. One of them is always the host and has the right to veto important decisions within quests, for example. There is a good reason for this: progress in missions and activities is only saved for the host. So if you return to your own world, you have to play everything again.

Luckily you get to keep your loot, of which you’ll find plenty in Dying Light 2. If you help a player in need or get valuable weapons and resources, it’s not all for nothing.

Invite friends or join a co-op session

In the online menu, you can invite friends by clicking on one of the three buttons under the player silhouettes (“Add friend”) or by opening the friend’s list on the left. If you want to join a game yourself, you can either select “Quick Join” and join a random world or you can click on “Find Games”.

Open game sessions are displayed here. You can see immediately how many players are playing in a co-op in this world and which mission is currently running. Pick one and join.

Is there crossplay in Dying Light 2?

As nice as the extensive co-op functions in Dying Light 2 is, there are unfortunately no possibilities for crossplay of any kind. On the PC, Steam users can play together with players via Epic Games, but there is no crossplay on the consoles, not even between PS4 and PS5 or Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

However, I think it’s likely that a crossplay feature will be implemented later as part of Techland’s extensive update plan.

I enjoy playing games, and gaming is a passion of mine. Among my favorite games are Tears of the Kingdom, GTA, and Cyberpunk.
