Although he confesses that in the end, he is happy with the result of the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 has been with us for a few days now, and in the face of everything that the versions for PS4 and Xbox One have generated and its performance problem, its original creator is happy with the final result. Mike Pondsmith has spoken about working with CD Projekt and how he thought ” that the team would not be able to do everything ” at first, but that the result left him happy.
While it suffered quite a few delays this year, as the game was meant to be launched in April this year and ended up arriving this past December 10th, Pondsmith has commented on how it was to work on its development.
The original board game dates back to the 1980s, and since then there have been many expansions and updates until a discussion with CD Projekt for the video game.
First, Pondsmith was eager to talk about how CDPR brought his iconic character Johnny Silverhand to life as he has always been the hero of Cyberpunk since its conception. Johnny can be described as passionate, determined, and oppositional but other members of Night City call him a terrorist. In the game he is played by Keanu Reeves, something that caught him in shock since he was not confirmed in the game; even less so played by a well-known and famous actor.
Mike explained how he came to know this: “Basically, what happened with CDPR I think is that they convinced Keanu and so far I don’t know how that was achieved but I hadn’t thought about Johnny,” he said. “They kept it a secret until I got to Warsaw and they asked me, ‘Are you OK with this?’ and I said, ‘Yes! Although Keanu is a great name attached to the project, Mike was more excited about the fact that a 56-year-old man could do with the character.
“It wasn’t because of how famous Keanu is as an actor, it was more than that Johnny is an inside person and you don’t know what’s really going on,” Pondsmith said. “He’s got a lot of inner damage and you don’t know what’s going to happen now, so I liked the fact that Keanu could be very inner and suddenly jump at something; that’s why it worked out so well for me. Considering the history, lore, and respect for Cyberpunk, Mike had a hard time opting for CD Projekt from now on.
And although the promotions and marketing caused a lot of hype on the part of the players, at first I wasn’t sure if the game would reach so many people; although I was relieved with the results. Speaking about the work with CD Projekt, he explained that: “It was a very very cooperative situation I also have something on my desk that is useful and that is that I also worked on video games”.
“I have no unrealistic ideas about what can be done with Cyberpunk 2077, in fact I did not think that some of the things that I have seen could be achieved! I thought, oh my God! This is going to take many hours to someone! “. Remember that the game is already the best-selling game in PC history during a launch and that CD Projekt has already recovered the costs of production and marketing .
When asked what he was concerned about on the scale of the game, he replied: “Things like population density and all that. And the fact that people don’t look like robots on the streets,” he said. “The general feeling of a city beyond what you see on the screen. I can hear car horns and things happening for miles which is what would happen in the city. Many of those things were difficult tasks but I’m quite happy so far with everything I’ve seen”.
