Blasphemous 2: Review – Revisit of Horrifying But, Beautiful Cvstodia

Blasphemous 2 - Review

Blasphemous 2 is a Metroidvania platform game developed by Game 17 and published by Team 17. It is a sequel to its predecessor which continues the story of Penitent One right from where its original game left off. You will get to revisit the beautiful world of Cvstodia but with more horrifying areas and enemies/bosses waiting for you. The game is surely a level up from its predecessor with its amazing level of art design, sound, and music, and the story will let you feel right back at home in the shoes of a last Penitent One from the member of The Miracle. It will take you on a long journey of approximately 15 hours through some amazing and scary areas that you might have wished that you have never witnessed but in the end, you will be glad that you did.

You will wake up from your grave and be introduced to new three weapons which are the main aspect of the game as they provide you with unique abilities that will help you get through the areas. However, you only get to start with any 1 of the 3 weapons but eventually, you get the rest of the two weapons as you progress through the game. Your starting weapon can have a huge impact in your early hours of gameplay because each weapon has its stats allowing you to hit the enemy hard or swiftly.

Veredicto, The Flail is our weapon of choice as it is the strongest weapon in the game and can hit enemies the hardest in three different directions. The arc of Veredicto attacks allows you to hit up, front, and down keeping the horrifying enemies away from you. Ruego Al Alba, The Sword is the balanced weapon in the game with the ability to hit enemies from above. If you are on a higher platform than enemies, jump in the air and attack to hit them with surprise. With the sword, you have a high chance of parrying the attacks of ability whereas, the Flail cannot parry and the Rapiers are inconsistent with parrying.

Apart from the weapons’ basic attacks and use, they have special abilities that will help you open up secret areas which will help you progress through the game. By progressing in the game, you will get to unlock abilities for Penitent One like Double Jump and Grab which will allow you to pass through areas more dynamically. The things in the environment that you could not use before will be helpful and take you to entrances of new areas where more horrors await you.

Blasphemous 2 also has the repetition of areas like its predecessor but it is not monotonous. The area that you will get to back is the City of the Blessed Name where you will get to meet Blood Upgrade Woman who will help you make Penitent One stronger in terms of Health. But each time you get an upgrade from her, her skin will be torn apart until she is nothing but a bloodied skeleton, a horrifying image. There are several disturbing characters that you will get to witness as you explore more areas and think why you have to witness it and leave nothing but a disturbing image (but in a good context).

The one thing that you can expect from Blasphemous 2 is the unforgiving game mechanics. If you have played the original then you might have known that every time that you die, your character becomes weaker until you have acclaimed your guilt from the point where you died. This mechanic will repeat the repetition in the game but only for a good cause. However, if you are not interested in getting back your guilt, you can purge yourself of your guilt by paying 500 Tears of Atonement to the Confessor.

There are various points of interest that you will get to find as you discover new areas. One of the most interesting but horrifying interest points is at the Wakes of the Streets where you will get to enter a Dream of The Mother NPC and defeat her nightmares to gain yourself rewarding items that will help you in various ways. So, exploring the side content of the game makes your journey worthwhile in Blasphemous 2.

Verdict – Score 9/10

Blasphemous 2 is a great addition to Metroidvania platform games as it does justice and brings more of its predecessor. The enemy and boss designs in Blasphemous 2 are a great improvement from the previous game which might be difficult for new players but slightly easier for players who completed the original game. The hidden areas and the traps will never let you take a breath from the enemies as they can catch you off guard at any point while you are traversing through an area. The new weapons immensely increase the game experience with the new mechanics that would make you feel like a stronger and more badass Penitent One.

Blasphemous 2 is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
