Cyberpunk 2077: Bug can destroy your saves, so prevent them

The release of Cyberpunk 2077 is quite problematic. One of the bugs can even cause you to lose your entire game status irretrievably. However, the cause is now known and you can at least partially prevent it.
How to recognize the error: If you are affected by the problem, the game will inform you when loading with the message “The game is damaged and cannot be loaded”. In this case, you have no choice but to use an older savegame.
What is behind the savegame bug?
As the developer CD Projekt Red explains on its support page, there is currently a maximum game size. The players already got to the bottom of the problem in the official forum and found out that it is exactly 8,192 kB, i.e. about 8 MB. If you exceed it, it will destroy your savegame.
How to prevent: As the studio explains, you can prevent this error by not piling up too many items and manufacturing materials in your inventory and storage. In addition, you should refrain from using the glitch with which you can duplicate items.
Saves frequently: It makes sense to create much different game saves. If you should exceed the mentioned 8 MB, you can at least fall back on an older savegame. Of course, that’s not a perfect solution. However, in an emergency, you can at least keep your lost progress within limits.
If you want to return to Cyberpunk 2077 because of severe problems, then you will learn in our article what exactly you can do.
Will the problem be fixed?
Officially, it is currently said that the maximum file size may be increased in the future. Even if that happens, it will not restore your saves. Once these are broken, you can no longer save them.
When are the patches coming?
The developer is already working on the bugs of Cyberpunk 2077 and regularly releases new patches. The update to version 1.05 was released on December 19, 2020. This mainly fixes various quest bugs and also eliminates the causes of crashes.
