God of War Ragnarok: How to Defeat Vanadis (Freya)– Boss Fight

God of War Ragnarok is filled with many boss fights and one of the main boss fights in the game is with the Valkyrie. The players who had played the prequel of this game would know the Valkyries are the optional bosses in the prequel game that can be defeated to get various cool items but in God of War Ragnarok, Kratos and Atreus will fight a Valkyrie named Vanadis in the main story progression.

In this guide, we’ll tell you how to defeat Vanadis in God of War Ragnarok.

Defeating Vanadis (Freya)

As Atreus is searching for answers to fulfill Loki’s journey, Kratos and Atreus will run into a Valkyrie named Vanadis. Now if you haven’t defeated her then your next cutscene might have been spoiled because Freya has come to fight Kratos as a Valkyrie because she knows that Kratos will not fight her. After the encounter, Kratos and Atrues will have to defeat her in the fight and this fight is a bit tricky because Afterall, you are fighting a Valkyrie.

  • Vanadis has several attacks and she also uses her wings to quickly move around the fighting area to change positions. At the start, you can aggress on her with the choice of your weapon and order Atreus to launch arrows at her while you are hitting her. She does block your hitting attacks with her sword but you can break her guard with a heavy attack. So, if you see her sword blocking the attack, just her with the heavy attack of the weapon to break her guard.
  • The starting attacks of Vanadis is Shooting arrows horizontally toward you and you can’t dodge them by walking to the side, you have to use your shield to block the arrows. She also does the ground Slam attacks where the Red Ring shows on her body and she’ll hit the ground a couple of times. You cannot dodge or block this attack so make sure to maintain enough distance from the slam’s effects to not get hit.
  • She also does the rapid fire of arrows on you where she shoots arrows one after the other and you can block them with the shield, dodge them again and again, or you can parry them to shoot them back at her to deal damage if you time them right.
  • Since she shoots a lot of arrows, it is not a good approach to always parry the arrows because you can get hit with another arrow so after blocking a couple of arrows, parry the next arrows and then aggress towards her to deal damage to her with the Leviathan Axe or Blades of Chaos.
  • Use the Runic Attacks of your weapons with Atreus Shooting at her to deal maximum damage to her. When you see the Red Ring Attack, just back off and when she finishes her moves then you can aggress her again.
  • You can play close to her and hit her easily and the only time you are backing off is when she is launching ground slam attacks.

After getting her HP to half, a short cutscene will play in which she flew Kratos to a new fighting area and launch a couple of arrows at him. Kratos will activate the Rage Fury and attack her. Now, she’ll have some new moves in the fight.

  • While she was shooting normal arrows at the beginning, she’ll start to shoot the Poisonous Bolts. You don’t want to get near the Poison because it’ll make you weaker and Vanadis stronger. She’ll launch several Poisnous Bolts near her to make you go back. You can still order Atreus to shoot at her while the poison goes away.
  • She’ll also use her sword now to attack you and when she does the sword attack, Yellow Rings will appear on her, meaning you cannot block it or parry it. You have to dodge and move out of the way of the Yellow Ring Attack. She’ll strike several times with the sword so you don’t want to get hit by these strikes.
  • The rest of the attacks will remain the same as at the start of the fight so you just have to parry some arrows back at her and block the spread arrow shot at her. Try to get close to her when she is not attacking the Red Ring attacks and deals damage to her by using the Runic Attacks, ordering Atreus to shoot arrows at her, and even with the Rage Fury.

Once you’ve figured out all of her attacks and know what to block, what to parry, and what to dodge, it’ll be very easy for you to defeat her. When you get her low on HP, the cutscene will start in which Kratos identifies her, and the cutscene will continue.
