Lies of P: Complete Edition Switch 2 Review

Lies of P is one of the best, if not the best, Soulslike games out there from a non-FromSoftwarestudio. Everything from narrative perspective to combat and world design is perfect in Lies of P. There are obvious reasons why this game became highly praised, especially by the Soulslike community. Personally, I absolutely loved the gothic aesthetic that Neowiz created for Lies of P, as it all resembles the beloved Bloodborne. Not only that, but the parry-heavy combat, like Sekiro, made Lies of P a unique experience for all the Soulslike game lovers. Now, after three years of its release, Lies of P has made its way to Nintendo Switch 2 with a Complete Edition, including the base game and the Overture DLC. This is our review of Lies of P: Complete Edition on Nintendo Switch 2.

Story and Environment

Lies of P takes place in the ruined, 19th-century Belle Epoque city of Krat. The Puppet Frenzy plague has massacred citizens. You play as P, a unique puppet who has the ability to lie and feel human emotions. P is one of the unique puppets created by Geppetto. After waking up in a rail car, P has to fight his way through the city of Krat to find Geppetto, his creator.  Throughout the whole adventure, the plot reveals more secrets and the true cause of the Puppet Frenzy. The main story has 11 chapters, and the Overture DLC adds more depth to the story.

Lies of P: Overture takes place before the events that led to the fall of Krat. Pinocchio and his companion Gemini will travel just before the infamous Puppet Frenzy via a broken Stargazer. However, it is necessary that players complete Chapter 9 of the original game and travel back to Chapter 5 to find the broken Stargazer. The story overall is pretty great, requiring players to uncover the roots of the catastrophe and rewrite history to save Krat.

The environment and level designs are great in Lies of P.  Overture’s environment is distinctively different than the original game. As the main game offers the gothic visuals, Overture has a totally new vibe that makes the environment a unique experience. You get to see the whole new world of Krat with challenging new enemy designs. Each area is unique and well-designed, which makes it fun to explore.

Gameplay & Combat

Lies of P is an action-RPG video game that offers the best Soulslike experience from a non-FromSoftware developing studio. There are a ton of similarities in core gameplay between Lies of P and the authentic Soulslike game. You rest at the Stargazers to reset the enemies, level up using a special currency, manage equipment, and more. Although the gameplay is mostly similar to Soulslike, the gameplay elements of weapon assembly and Legion Arms are what make Lies of P unique. Every weapon can be assembled into something new. It increases the overall build variety for the players, allowing them to experiment with different weapon combinations throughout the journey.

The combat in Lies of P takes inspiration from Sekiro and Bloodborne, the two infamous titles from FromSoftware. A lot of combat relies on parrying incoming attacks for fatal strikes. Performing the perfect block negates the damage and even breaks the enemy’s weapon. However, for the AOE enemies, dodging plays a crucial role. The base game has a ton of weapons and various Legion Arms to help P in the journey. Overture DLC offers new weapons and two Legion Arms, offering more ways to synergize your build. There are two new Legion Arms, each with its unique power that helps greatly in Overture. Moreover, the new weapons also include a Bow, the first ranged weapon of the game. It allows you to target enemies from a distance, allowing you to try out a new style.

Performance

Lies of P runs very well on Nintendo Switch 2, especially in Performance Mode. It runs at a stable 60 FPS in both handheld and docked modes. However, there are visual compromises on this port. You will instantly feel the reduction in texture quality and lighting compared to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Although the port offers Quality Mode, it lacks performance. Playing Lies of P in Quality Mode on Switch 2 causes frame drops, which can ruin the whole smooth gameplay experience.

Verdict – Score 9/10

Lies of P is a great port to the Nintendo Switch 2. The complete edition provides the base game, Overture DLC, and all the bonus cosmetics. As it is one of the best Soulslike titles ever, it is great to see it over on the Switch console. Nintendo Switch 2 device handles this port surprisingly well, running it at a stable 60 FPS in Performance Mode. Although Quality Mode is offered, it is best to avoid it for a smooth gameplay experience.
