God of War Ragnarok: How to Defeat Thor – Boss Fight (1st Encounter)

In God of War Ragnarok, Karots will have to defeat many enemies and early in the game, Kratos will get to fight Thor for the first time. Thor will come to Kratos’s house with Mead and Kratos will allow him to come inside his house. During the cutscene, Thor will call for Odin, and then Odin will come inside the house and offer Peace to Kratos. Kratos will refuse the peace offer which will then leads to the fight with Thor.

In this guide, we’ll tell you how to defeat Thor in God of War Ragnarok.

Defeating Thor

As the cutscene continues of Odin making peace with Kratos, Kratos will refuse the offer and Thor will strike Kratos with his hammer. When the cutscene ends, the battle with Thor will start.

Phase 1

At the start, Kratos will not have his Leviathan Axe so you’ll have to fight Thor with bare hands. All of the bosses will have Red Ring Attacks and Yellow Ring Attacks. Make sure to dodge both of these attacks because these attacks are Unblockable and put Kratos vulnerable to attacks.

Thor will mock you as you don’t have any weapons and start fighting you with his hands as well. Attack Thor with the attack button and counter Thor’s attacks with your shield. As he is about to land a punch, press the guard button to counter the attack and aggress him with your attacks. Once your Rage is charged, activate the rage and attack Thor to deplete his HP. Thor will move very quickly and uses his hammer to strike thunder on you, you can dodge it as well as block it with your shield. Make sure to dodge the ground slam because it is the red ring attack.

When you deplete Thor’s HP to low, Thor will go down on his knees and you’ll get the option to finish him but the cutscene will start and Thor will send Kratos to a new location where the next phase of the fight will begin.

Phase 2

The second phase will begin in a new spot and Thor’s HP will regenerate to full. Thor will use his Hammer in this phase. Use the shield to counter the Hammer attacks and look out for the Red Ring, dodge out of the way when you see the red or yellow ring on Thor. Use the Axe to Strike Thor to deplete his HP and use the shield to block thunder attacks of Thor and wind attacks Thor.

When you depleted almost half of his HP, a cutscene will play in which Thor will kill Kratos and then Bring him back to life using the thunder from his hammer. He’ll want to fight the real Kratos so it’s time to show him the real Kratos. Use the pillar around the fighting area to deal a great amount of damage to him and use the Leviathan Axe to deplete Thor’s HP. Thor attacks will remain the same so just keep dodging the ring’s attacks and block and counter the normal attacks. Aggress on Thor to deplete his HP.

When you deplete Thor’s HP to almost end, you’ll get the option to finish him. Press the button and the cutscene will start and they both start fighting each other and reach a new area.

Phase 3

In this last phase, they both will strike their weapons at each other and it will create a lightning tree in the middle of the battle area. Thor’s HP will regenerate to full again and he’ll also have a couple of new attacks in this phase. He’ll be more aggressive and will do a Red Ring Attack on the ground which will rain lightning bolts from the sky on the area. If you look closely, the locations of lightning bolts will be revealed when he is doing the attack so make sure to keep your distance from the marked locations.

Use the shield to counter and block the hammer attacks and it’ll give you the edge to aggress against him with the Leviathan Axe. You’ll also get to press the buttons on the screen during the small cutscene in this phase to complete certain actions. Keep track of Thor’s movement and his Red Ring Attacks to dodge them whenever your Rage is ready. Activate the Rage to deplete Thor’s HP faster and when you deplete Thor’s HP almost to the end. A new cutscene will play in which Kratos will be in full anger and break Thor’s Tooth.

Thor will say that you’ve paid the blood debt and then leave the area.
